I used to think I couldn’t pull off bare arms. My shoulders are too wide, I thought. My arms are too bulky. “It’s just not my look,” I said to myself.
No matter how warm the weather, I wore a cardigan over sleeveless tops and dresses. I sweated through too many summers.
It changed when I got a tattoo on my upper right arm a few months ago. I love my tattoo. It expresses my connection to nature and my love of art- it’s an expression of myself. It’s beautiful and with this tattoo, I love my arms. I no longer see them as too wide or too boxy, I see my arms as beautiful. That’s right, I’ve been rocking sleeveless style all summer long!
I love my body and I love my tattoos. I have 14 tattoos and counting! Each one represents a piece of me and a significant time in my life. My tattoos are beautiful and a form of self-expression and, as such, my tattoos give me the opportunity to see the beauty in me!
The messages we tell ourselves are so powerful. My butt is too flat. My breasts are too big. We indoctrinate ourselves with shame and doubt about our bodies. Whatever you tell yourself about yourself, you will surely believe. Tell yourself you are beautiful, see your body as beautiful, and you will believe you are beautiful. And, really, you are! Or haven’t you gotten that yet? Maybe, like me, you’re still working on it.
Yay, tattoos! I recently spoke about tattoos at Ignite Fort Collins, check it out here:
Do you have any tattoos? Have they changed the way you feel about your body or your relationship with your body?
